When filling out the entry it looks like this: BibDesk Catalog Entry When working with BibDesk, every bibliographic reference gets an entry-think of this like the old catalog cards at the library. In this post, I would like to simply introduce BibDesk as a stand-alone bibliography manager. Several of my colleagues have asked me to recommend a good bibliography manager, but they have not wanted to dive headlong into LaTeX citations (the learning curve is admittedly quite steep). Both Mendeley and Zotero can achieve the same result, but one needs to export every time a change is made to the bibliography. In another post I will talk more about the implications of (ii), but for now just know that this means BibDesk talks easily with Pandoc and LaTeX without the need to export anything. I like BibDesk for three main reasons: (i) like Skim, it is a free and open source project created by academics for other academics, (ii) it stores all its data in a flat BibTex file, and (iii) it can interact easily with Skim via AppleScript. BibDesk is an excellent bibliography management tool similar to Mendeley or Zotero. Or, if you’re feeling particularly appreciative, I wouldn’t stop you buying me a pint.In several of the scripts I use to interact with Skim, I have mentioned that they receive bibliographic information from BibDesk.

Let me know! Because Zot2Bib is hosted on now, you should get the appropriate update automatically.Įven better, if you’re so inclined, just fork it on Github and get hacking.

If there’s been a recent update to Firefox, Zotero, BibDesk or Mac OS X (and especially AppleScript), any of these could be causing problems. Since Zot2Bib has a lot of dependencies, it breaks rather more often than I’d like. This extension contains only sugary goodness, but please don’t hold me responsible if anything bad should happen while you’re using it.

Note: if you’re trying and failing to update to the latest version, remove the previously installed version and restart Zotero before continuing. Click that, then click Help in the pop-up menu for further instructions (you’ll need to set up one or more destination files using the preferences dialog, shown below). You should see see a new Z2B icon at the top left of Zotero. In the Add-ons Manager, click the gear icon at top right, choose Install Add-on from File, and pick the.

Right-click and choose Save Link As … to download Zot2Bib.
Then again, storing references has to be one click, or there’s a risk I don’t bother.

I also prefer a database format and PDF file library layout I can easily understand and make part of my backup routine.
